Semester 2 FINAL Report Cards

The semester 2 FINAL report cards will be available for PICK UP for ONLY 2 days

Wednesday, July 7th and Thursday, July 8th

8:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.  (in the front foyer of the school)

Students unable to pick up their own report card can provide a self-addressed & stamped envelope, to the main office, for the report card to be mailed out.  Report cards NOT picked up July 7th or 8th will be put with "Start Up" packages to be distributed the week before school starts (August 30th).

 
 
Student "Start-Up" Package for 2010 / 2011

Student "Start-Up" packages will be available for pick-up the week before school starts, from Monday, August 30, 2010, until Thursday, September 2, 2010, between the hours of 8:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m., in the front hallway of the school. 

It is VERY important for students to pick up their package so that they can update the enclosed "Data Verification Form".  This DVF MUST be updated and signed by parents/guardians and RETURNED on the first day of school (Tuesday, September 7, 2010).  Once the student hands in their DVF, they will receive their official 2010 / 2011 timetable.

 
 
Grade 9 Orientation Day -- Thursday, September 1, 2010

This special event for our new grade 9s will take place on Wednesday, September 1, 2010 from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m.  This will be an opportunity for students to go on a tour of the school, receive their locker number, meet fellow grade 9 students and enjoy a free BBQ lunch!

** Please be aware that students will be required to purchase a special lock from the main office on this day - $7.00 /  lock**

Southwood Hall of Fame

Southwood will be holding the annual Hall of Fame assembly in the Southwood gymnasium on June 4, 2010. The assembly recognizes outstanding contributions of Southwood graduates; this year's inductees include environmentalist Lisa "Diz" Glithero, Canadian ambassador Ken Lewis, and digital artist Vincent Marcone. Southwood staff and students are proud to be part of the personal histories of such notable individuals, and are honoured to induct these commendable alumni into the Southwood Hall of Fame. A plaque will appear in Southwood's Hall of Fame showcase, celebrating each inductee's achievements. The ceremony will take place at 9:45am and will run to 11:00am on Friday, 4 June. A luncheon will be held in the library for the Inductees, their families, and guests following the ceremony.

Student Card & Yearbook 2010 / 2011

In order to participate in co-curricular activities at Southwood (activities beyond the academic curriculum) students MUST purchase a Southwood Student Card.

"AFTER Super Sale" Prices:

  • $35 = Southwood 09/10 Student Card
  • $40 = 2010 / 2011 Yearbook (received in the Fall of 2011)
  • $20 = Extra-Curricular MUSIC fee
  • $45 = Full Year Fitness Club Pass
  • $30 = 1 Semester ONLY Fitness Club Pass

Payment either cash or cheque.  Cheques should be made payable to "Southwood S.S."

 
 
Toyota Technical Academy - October 13 - 20, 2010

Toyota enjoyed their time so much in 2008 at Southwood Secondary School that they are returning again in October with 60 students.  They arrive on Wednesday, October 13, 2010, and will stay until Wednesday, October 20, 2010.

Host families are needed to billet one student per home.  Hosts are paid $175 to help with additional costs incurred.  Forty hours of Community Service will be given to all students whose families host.

Grand River Envirothon 2010

Southwood sent two teams to this year’s Grand River Envirothon, a day-long environmental skills competition.  Competing against 15 teams from within the Grand River watershed, Southwood Team #1 secured the silver medal with a strong final presentation and top marks in Wildlife Ecology.  Southwood Team #2, made up of three first-year competitors, finished the competition in 5th place.  Both teams competed with Sabre pride and proved that Southwood’s environmental students are tops!

 
 
Nutrition for Learning

Nutrition for Learning is an organization established in 1997 to ensure all children and youth go to school well nourished.  They support over 100 community programs including breakfast, morning meal, snack, and lunch programs that impact over 9,000 children and youth daily.  Nutrition for Learning was recently nominated for the Non-Profit / Charitable Award at the 2010 Business Excellence Awards Gala.  Additionally, Naturopathic Doctor Kristina Brooks touts the program as one that satisfies such "an obvious need in the community." 

 

Nutrition for Learning asks that the community donate Canadian Tire Money to help raise money for nutrition programs throughout the region.  Click here to read their newsletter.

 
 
Southwood Shines at Skills Competition

Southwood wins gold, silver and bronze at this year’s Regional Technological Skills Competitions.  Touted to be the largest skilled trades competition in Canada, with many competitors,and spectators, in over 37 skilled trades contest areas. The regional competitions challenged the talents of six Southwood students from March 22 - 25. 

At the competition in March, Ben Bond and Jake Ott contended in welding.   Jordan Budimlic and Kurtis Laidlaw tested their skill in auto collision repair.  Jamie Moyer and Alistair Smith competed in precision machining.

Gold medal winner Kurtis Laidlaw will compete in auto collision at RIM Park on May 17-19 along with Jamie Moyer who won gold in precision machining. 

Southwood Technological Studies teacher Mark Passarelli is proud of these students.  “They were very professional, supportive while preparing for the competition and during the competition itself.  They represented Southwood Sabres well through their skills.”

Free 2010

All secondary schools across Waterloo Country join together for one night of music to raise awareness and financial support for Africa.  "Free 2010" is an outdoor benefit concert/film festival with all proceeds going towards "Free the Children", specifically towards a water project in Kenya.  Tickets are $5.

Community Service Hours

The next   Community Service Hours collection will take place in January 2011. Forms are available in the main office. The submission of CSH is a diploma requirement.  All students are required to have completed 40 hours of community service in order to qualify for their high school diploma.

The 2008 / 2009 yearbook has arrived!  If you had purchased a yearbook - come to the main office to pick up your copy.  The cost to purchase last year's yearbook is $40.

Sabre SUPER SALE -- Thursday, September 9, 2010

Students will have an opportunity to purchase a 2010/2011 student card, fitness membership and / or REQUEST a 2010/2011 yearbook at a reduced rate on Thursday, September 9, 2010.  There will also be "Bundle" pricing to purchase any of the three at a reduced rate.  More detailed information will be provided in the Student Start-Up Packages.

Class of 2010 Commencement

Commencement for the Class of 2010 will be held on Friday, October 22, 2010, at Conestoga College (Doon Campus, Kitchener).  The ceremony will begin at 7:30 p.m.  Graduates will be expected to arrive between 6:15 p.m. - 6:45 p.m.  Invitations will be mailed out to graduates in September 2010.  Tickets will go on sale beginning of October 2010.
